Yoga

Strength and flexibility for life on and off the mat

“Yoga is not about touching your toes, it’s about what you learn on the way down.”

- Jigar Gor

Many people do not realize that Yoga itself is a philosophy on life. Yoga asana, the movement, is an opportunity to practice the wisdom of this philosophy. The very heart of yoga practice is ‘abyhasa’, or a steady effort in the direction you want to go. Yoga provides us the opportunity to incorporate mindfulness and movement into the same practice, therefore doubly benefitting the body and mind. Yoga is the art of waking up.

There are eight primary focuses or “limbs” of yoga: ethics, behavior, postures, breath, awareness, concentration, reflection and union. Each time we practice the asanas or postures, we have an opportunity to practice these concepts. For example, some of the ethics/behaviors are truthfulness, cleanliness and non-violence. This may appear in your practice as “how honest can I be with myself about my level of mastery of this pose, how much control can I perform it with, and how kind can I be to myself about wherever I am at…”

This practice allows for healing on multiple levels. It is phenomenal for maintaining a balance of strength and flexibility in the body, control and awareness, regenerative movements for healing from injuries, and strengthening the mind by providing an opportunity to practice presence, receptivity and being in the body.

Depth Wellness provides private or small group classes that are customized to you. The basis of our yoga practice is developed from Vinyasa yoga, focused on pairing movement with the breath to create a rhythmic practice. Classes can be more oriented towards physical challenge and endurance, therapeutic movement for injuries, or restorative sessions for rehabilitating the nervous system. Philosophy is incorporated throughout the class to bring you back to mindfulness no matter the intensity of the movement to help you reconnect to your own vitality.

“Yoga is a metaphor for life. You have to take it slowly. You can’t rush. You can’t skip to the next position. You can’t judge yourself. You just have to breathe, and let go. It is a workout for your mind, your body and your soul.”
